NASCAR tweaked its 36-race 2007 Nextel Cup schedule only slightly, leaving the venues — including the 10 tracks that make up the Chase for the Nextel Cup — unchanged for the third consecutive season.

The schedule announced Thursday has the exhibition Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway leading off the season Feb. 10. The Daytona 500 officially kicks off the season Feb. 18.

The Car of Tomorrow — which was designed with safety and livelier racing in mind — will make its debut March 25 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The car, which will be phased in over the next three years, is scheduled to run 16 races in 2007.

"There is a lot of anticipation," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. "It started on a piece of paper, then it went on to a computer and now teams have a physical model. I know that we are very excited to get the car out there and watch it drive."

The second Daytona date will be moved back one week to July 7, making way for New Hampshire International Speedway on July 1. Chicagoland, in turn, moves back a week to July 15.

The other change involved moving Indianapolis Motor Speedway up a week to July 29, swapping with Pocono Raceway (Aug. 5).

The 26th and final qualifying race will again be at Richmond International Raceway, and the Chase will begin Sept. 16 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Then it's on to Dover, Kansas, Talladega and a stop at Lowe's Motor Speedway in suburban Charlotte.

From there the Cup series will go to Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas, Phoenix and then crown the champion at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 18.

When NASCAR boss Brian France said in July he was considering changes to the Chase, which he developed in 2004, many believed the schedule could be one of the alterations — perhaps by adding a road course to the final 10 events. The series races twice a year on road courses, and critics of the system believe every kind of track should be represented during the playoffs to make it a true championship battle.

France did not immediately comment on the 2007 Cup schedule.

The Busch and Truck Series schedules were not released Thursday, and the sanctioning body is still working on a deal to hold a Busch Series race in Montreal next season.
